Lana Lambert
The Artist
I love turning a blank sketchbook into a vessel for my soul. I love transforming a raw piece of material into something imbued with magic. I love feeling an old iron press become an extension of me. The natural world provides boundless inspiration for me and I love being in my garden or with my goats if I’m not drawing, painting, carving a block, or operating a letterpress machine.
Printmaking has become a natural focus for me. My process usually begins with sketching a concept, sometimes painting a rough watercolor, and then I transfer a design onto several blocks. Those are carved by hand and then printed, sometimes with several layers to an image to complete an edition of prints. The uniqueness of my letterpress cards comes from the fact that most of my images are hand carved and all of the type is handset from antique lead type. Many people use photopolymer plates for their designs but I just can’t bring myself to use them. I like doing it all by hand.
I’m always getting fresh ideas and like to share a better view of my process for those who are interested. Want to see my latest card edition being made? Interested in the new painting I’m working on or book design I’m binding? You can follow my latest endeavors at www.LambertPress.blogspot.com.
